The Republican Left of Catalonia (Esquerra Republicana) is set to present an initiative, Tuesday, in the Spanish Parliament questioning the organization of the 2030 World Cup in Morocco. The initiative, as reported by Spanish media, highlights that Morocco suffers from «severe restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly», in addition to the fact that «homosexual relationships are still legally pursued in the kingdom». This initiative is expected to be presented as part of a non-binding proposal discussed in the Foreign Affairs Committee, which believes that the three countries organizing the tournament (Spain, Portugal, and Morocco) have not taken adequate steps to ensure human rights in the host countries. Consequently, the Republican Left has called on the Spanish government to intervene and take a decisive stance. The signatories of the initiative, Francesc-Marc Álvaro Vidal, Jordi Salvador i Duch, and Etna Estrems Vayos, emphasized the need for the Spanish government to establish «clear and binding strategies» to ensure the protection of human rights and prevent any potential violations during the tournament. The proposal also urges the parliament to call on the Spanish government to demand the suspension of Saudi Arabia's selection as the host for the 2034 World Cup until the protection of human rights and working conditions for workers, particularly those of migrant origin, are guaranteed.
