A 20-year-old Moroccan man set his 17-year-old girlfriend on fire, burning her alive inside a house in the La Isleta neighborhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The victim, who had been living with him in a squatted property, suffered severe burns covering 95% of her body and remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Dr. Negrín University Hospital. The attack took place around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. According to initial investigations, the suspect doused papers in fuel, set them alight, and threw them at the victim, setting her on fire. He also suffered smoke inhalation and is being treated under police custody at the same hospital. Spanish media report that the victim had recently left a shelter for minors to move in with the suspect just weeks before the assault. Emergency services were alerted by a local resident who noticed the fire, allowing medics to respond quickly and rush the girl to the hospital in a specialized ambulance. Authorities are treating the case as gender-based violence and are considering transferring the victim to a specialized burn unit in Seville if her condition stabilizes.
