Safouan, an 18-year-old high school graduate and food delivery worker, was set to go on a long-awaited family vacation to Morocco this July. But tragedy struck just days before the trip. While delivering meals on a scooter in Rotterdam, Netherlands, he was fatally struck by a tram on Friday, July 11. Since that day, the accident site has become a place of mourning. Flowers now cover the grass, as family and friends gather daily to remember him. «We were supposed to go to Morocco today. Just a nice time as a family», said Safouan's younger brother Ashraf (16) in an interview with Dutch national broadcaster NOS. «Now we're going there to bury him», he added sadly. Ashraf and his friend Amine (18) frequently return to the spot where the accident occurred. «I didn't know what was happening to me. We were together every day. That's not possible anymore», Amine said, visibly emotional. «He was riding on the sidewalk here, and then he hit the tram. He was dragged all the way to the end there», Ashraf explained, pointing toward the tracks. Erasmiaans Gymnasium, the school where Safouan had just graduated, is also mourning the loss of their student. A classmate launched a fundraiser in his name to build a well, an act of sadaqah jariyah, a form of ongoing charity in Islam. «It's something that continues to benefit others even after you pass», Amine said. In less than a week, the campaign raised over €40,000. «It shows us that we're not alone», Ashraf said. «There's so much love for him, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone».
