A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck early Wednesday, September 3, about 31 km south of Amizmiz in the Marrakech-Safi region. The quake occurred at 4:25 a.m. at a shallow depth of 12.9 km, making it widely felt in nearby towns, according to Volcano Discovery. The disaster-reporting platform also noted that the quake's shallow depth explains why it was strongly felt near the epicenter. The tremor hit a region still scarred by the deadly September 8, 2023 earthquake, which measured 6.9 in magnitude. That quake, centered 73.4 km southwest of Marrakech near Ighil, killed nearly 3,000 people, injured at least 5,000, and left thousands homeless.
