The Moroccan Consul in Libya has called on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to work with the Ministry of Education to grant Moroccan nationals more time to regularize their educational status, Libyan media reported on Sunday. In a letter to the GNU, the consulate highlighted the challenges faced by the Moroccan community after years without formal consular representation in Libya. Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rabat has also been informed of the concerns raised by community members. The request comes in response to a decision by the GNU's Ministry of Education barring foreign students from enrolling in the 2025/2026 academic year unless they hold a valid residency permit of at least one year. A three-month grace period has been granted for those without valid permits to apply. In June 2023, Morocco appointed two new consuls in Libya, in Benghazi and in Tripoli, marking the reopening of its consular presence after years of absence. Moroccan diplomatic delegations withdrew from Tripoli in 2014 amid escalating armed conflict between rival political factions.
