A Moroccan woman has been arrested among six people in Accra, Ghana, for illegal gold trading, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) announced on October 7. The suspects, including four Ghanaians and an American citizen, were detained during a task force operation following weeks of surveillance. According to GoldBod, a government agency responsible for buying, assaying, selling, and exporting gold and other minerals produced by licensed artisanal and small-scale miners, the group attempted to purchase about 2.1 kilograms of gold, worth approximately 1.7 million Moroccan dirhams (MAD), without authorization. Refining equipment was also seized from the American suspect, suggesting plans to process gold illegally. The six have been charged with conspiracy, illegal gold trading, and refining without approval under Ghana's Criminal Offences Act and the new Gold Board Act of 2025. Authorities said the arrests reflect a «zero-tolerance stance» toward unlicensed gold operations and warned that both local and foreign traders must comply with licensing laws. Investigations remain ongoing.
