On Wednesday, the government delegate in Melilla, Sabrina Moh, along with the acting Chief of Police, José Ángel Sanz, unveiled the launch of the smart border with Morocco. This initiative aims to bolster security and streamline surveillance at border crossings. Ceuta is anticipated to implement a similar system shortly, potentially going live as early as November. The smart border leverages the new European «Entry/Exit System», which automates entry and exit procedures using visual recognition technology for travelers. This system, standardized across all European Union nations, provides an efficient method for monitoring the movements of third-country nationals within the Schengen area, thereby enhancing border management and mitigating security threats. The advanced system ensures complete identity verification by matching official documents with biometric data, including facial recognition and fingerprints, with 100% accuracy. It is applicable to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, as officers utilize tablets to collect passengers' biometric information, improving traceability and minimizing the risk of forgery or illegal entry.
