The Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal in Rabat has sentenced a man in his twenties to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of his elderly mother. His younger brother, who had been charged with complicity and failure to report a crime, was acquitted after being released on bail, according to the newspaper Al-Akhbar. The case dates back to April of last year, when the body of a woman in her seventies was discovered inside a well in the Sidi Al-Ghandour area near Khemisset under mysterious circumstances. The accused initially attempted to claim that his mother had taken her own life, but suspicions raised by the Royal Gendarmerie prompted an in-depth investigation under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor. A forensic examination revealed that the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds and severe injuries before being thrown into the well, evidence that contradicted the son's suicide claim. Investigators determined that the suspect, who already had a criminal record for theft, assault, and drug trafficking, attacked his mother after she refused to give him money to buy alcohol and drugs, then threw her into the well while she was still alive. The main suspect was arrested in Khemisset, while his brother, who failed to report the crime, was also questioned. Following extensive investigations, the court delivered its verdict on Monday, sentencing the perpetrator to life in prison and acquitting his younger brother.
