DR ‹ › Abdelilah Benkirane continues to navigate a delicate line on Iran. Speaking on Saturday at a meeting of the PJD's general secretariat, he said: «Since its Islamic Revolution, it must be acknowledged that Iran has consistently defended the Palestinian cause. That is a fact. And today, Iran as a state is facing existential threats because of that support». Adopting a more balanced tone, Benkirane also criticized what he described as Iran's «aggressions» against Arab countries, notably Qatar and Oman. He further pointed to Tehran's influence in Iraq, Lebanon, and, for a time, Syria, comparing it to Egypt's role in Yemen under Jamal Abdel Nasser. Despite these criticisms, the PJD secretary-general stressed that «Iran remains an Islamic state facing our natural enemy: Israel». He also warned of the potential consequences of a collapse of the Iranian regime for the broader Islamic world. «Iran is the only state that confronts them (Israel and the United States) openly and publicly (…) In Morocco, we must support our Iranian brothers», he said. Benkirane had previously taken a similar stance on November 23, 2024, stating that «the axis of resistance is the only party that has supported the Palestinians and paid a heavy price for it», referring to Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Iran.
