DR ‹ › This Monday morning, March 30, authorities barred historian and activist Maati Monjib from leaving Morocco through Rabat-Salé Airport. Monjib was en route to France, invited by Paris 1 University to give lectures, despite having received a royal pardon in July 2024. The Moroccan Committee for Supporting Political Prisoners announced that Monjib has initiated a hunger strike in protest against the imposed travel ban. In their statement, the committee characterized this decision as yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of violations and harassment that Monjib has faced over the past 11 years. These have included arbitrary detention, defamation, prosecution on fabricated charges, the confiscation of his home, car, and bank account, loss of his university position, and repeated travel bans, even for humanitarian and medical reasons. The committee denounced the decision, asserting that it «contradicts Article 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which states that judicial supervision measures, including travel bans, are limited to two months and can be extended up to five times. This was not adhered to in Dr. Monjib's case, clearly representing an abuse of power and a blatant violation of the law».
