At the initiative of Conservative MP Andrew Murrison, the lower house of the British Parliament will hold a session on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 18, to discuss relations with Morocco. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected to attend and respond to MPs' interventions. This session comes in the wake of the British government's support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara, expressed on June 1. Following his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during the fifth session of the Strategic Dialogue between the two countries, the UK's top diplomat described Morocco's 2007 proposal as the «most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution» to the dispute. David Lammy also «discussed trade and business opportunities for British companies in Morocco (...) ahead of the 2030 FIFA men's World Cup, which Morocco is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal», noted MP Andrew Murrison in a statement. The Conservative MP highlighted that «Total trade in goods and services (exports plus imports) between the UK and Morocco was £4.2 billion in 2024, up £0.6bn in current prices from 2023.». It is worth noting that the lower house of the British Parliament previously held a session on May 8, 2024, just two months before the snap elections set for July 4, dedicated to exploring the possibility of UK recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. That session, initiated by former Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski, was notably marked by the presence of pro-Polisario voices in the House of Commons.
