A Dutch prosecutor has requested a 14-year prison sentence for 31-year-old Rotterdam resident Soufiane B., accused of fatally stabbing his cousin Hicham on a beach in Al Hoceima, Morocco, in July 2023. The two reportedly had a long-running conflict that escalated during a family vacation. Prosecutors described the case as «a great human tragedy», noting that Hicham's death occurred during his sister's wedding. After the killing, B.'s parents' home in Rotterdam was targeted in apparent revenge attacks, Dutch media reported on Wednesday. Although the crime took place in Morocco, the Netherlands took over the prosecution at the request of Moroccan authorities, following concerns raised by B.'s lawyer about prison conditions there. According to the investigation, B. was seen carrying knives after stepping out of his father's car before the attack. While he denied intent to kill, claiming self-defense, prosecutors found no supporting evidence. They concluded that the stabbing likely occurred «in a fit of passion», and have charged him with manslaughter.
