Somalia has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. The position was expressed by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday in Rabat during a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, according to a statement from the Moroccan Prime Minister's Office. At the UN Security Council, Somalia voted on October 31 in favor of Resolution 2797, which endorses Morocco's autonomy initiative for the Sahara. In September 2022, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Somalia announced it would soon open a consulate general in Dakhla. Since then, Mogadishu has maintained its stance despite repeated attempts by Algeria to influence it, efforts illustrated by several meetings between Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and his Somali counterpart: on November 21, 2024, and August 9, 2025, in Algiers, as well as on September 27, 2025, in New York during the 80th UN General Assembly. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also met with Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers on November 11. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council until December 31, 2026, Somalia's continued support represents an important diplomatic backing for Morocco ahead of the April and October sessions devoted to the Sahara issue.
