Moroccan computer scientist Rachid Guerraoui has been elected a member of the prestigious Academia Europaea, a pan-European academy of humanities, letters, law, and sciences. On LinkedIn, the Switzerland-based scientist reacted to the announcement on Friday, writing: «Honored to be elected to Academia Europaea». With over three decades of experience, Guerraoui has held professorial positions at several leading institutions, including the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique de Saclay, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is best known for his research on electronic transactions, epidemic information dissemination, and forgiving consensus algorithms. In September 2024, he received the Dahl-Nygaard Prize during the European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) held in Vienna. In April, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) named Guerraoui the first recipient of the Luiz André Barroso Award for his pioneering work in distributed computing and his efforts to expand computer science education in Africa. In 2019, Guerraoui was appointed by King Mohammed VI as a member of the Special Committee on the Model of Development, tasked with crafting a new development model for Morocco.
