The Spanish Ministry of Health reported that 78.2% of imported measles cases in Spain since early 2025 originated from Morocco, which has recorded over 25,000 suspected cases and 184 deaths since October 2023, according to the World Health Organization. So far this year, Spain has confirmed 229 measles cases: 78 imported, 78 linked to those infections, and 73 of unknown origin. This situation has prompted health authorities to raise the alert level, especially ahead of the holiday season when travel from countries with active outbreaks—particularly Morocco—is expected to increase, Spanish media reported. In response, the Ministry of Health's Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Center has called for stricter control measures, increased vaccination efforts, and heightened public awareness campaigns to prevent local transmission despite Spain's high vaccination coverage.
