In a move that reinforces Morocco's role as a continental hub for tourism and innovation, the financial agreement to establish the first thematic office of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Africa was signed today, Thursday, May 29, 2025. The signing took place on the sidelines of the 123rd session of the organization's Executive Council in Spain. The agreement was signed by Fatima Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, alongside UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, and witnessed by Morocco's Ambassador to Madrid, Karima Benyaich. This financial agreement marks a key step toward launching the UNWTO's office in Rabat, which will focus on innovation and tourism investment across Africa. It establishes the framework for financial and administrative cooperation between Morocco and the UNWTO, based on Article 5 of the headquarters agreement signed in January. This framework aims to ensure a strong and efficient start for the office both organizationally and operationally. The project aligns fully with the royal vision of making African cooperation a pillar of sustainable development. The office will support the implementation of the UNWTO's 2030 program on the continent, aiming to transform tourism into a powerful driver of economic and social progress. The new office will enhance Morocco's position as a leading platform for tourism innovation in Africa, leveraging the country's experience in sustainable tourism development and investment attraction. It will also assist African destinations in building advanced tourism systems through innovative programs that address the challenges of digital and societal transformation. The opening of the office in Rabat demonstrates international confidence in Morocco's regional and global role. It also acts as a catalyst for strengthening South-South cooperation and strategic partnerships that will shape the future of African tourism with an innovative and comprehensive vision.
