The South African party uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) has voiced support for Morocco's position on the Sahara, a move that has sparked concern in Tindouf, according to media outlets close to the Polisario Front. «This new stance represents a serious precedent. It marks a break between two eras. It is a significant loss and a notable setback for our influence in the political circles of a once-friendly country. This support demands an urgent reassessment by Sahrawi diplomatic officials», one outlet warned. The same source criticized the current state of Sahrawi diplomacy, describing it as «a diplomacy that sidelines expertise and remains a prisoner of loyalty to power. Most diplomats, once activists for their people's rights, have become high-ranking officials in pursuit of personal prosperity». The outlet also expressed concern over MK's growing influence. «This party, founded in 2023 by Jacob Zuma, is now the third-largest political force in South Africa. It is expanding rapidly and will play a crucial role in the upcoming elections», it noted. With 58 seats in the National Assembly, Jacob Zuma's MK party is positioning itself as the leading opposition force to President Cyril Ramaphosa. By contrast, the second-largest party, the Democratic Alliance—associated with the white minority and holding 87 seats—joined the governing coalition in July 2024. Its leader, John Steenhuisen, currently serves as Minister of Agriculture.
