Moroccan watermelon sales in the European Union surged during the first half of 2025, rising by 53.49% compared to the same period last year, according to Hortoinfo, citing data from the European Statistics Service. Between January and June 2025, EU countries imported a total of 689.03 million kilograms of watermelon, a drop of 23.33% from the same period in 2024. The overall value of these imports reached about 680.48 million euros, with an average price of €0.99 per kilogram. Spain remained the EU's top supplier, shipping 150.55 million kilograms, or 21.85% of total imports, though this represented a steep decline of 111.12 million kilograms compared to 2024. Morocco ranked second, exporting 130.6 million kilograms, 18.95% of the total, an increase of 45.51 million kilograms year-on-year. The Netherlands came in third with 65.01 million kilograms (9.44% of the market), though most of this volume was re-exports rather than local production. Dutch shipments fell by 18.08% compared to the first half of 2024. Turkey took fourth place, boosting its exports by 4.75% to 44.04 million kilograms, equal to 6.39% of EU imports. In terms of value, Morocco led the pack, generating 162.43 million euros in sales at an average price of €1.24/kg. Spain followed with 153.27 million euros at €1.02/kg, while the Netherlands recorded 76.67 million euros at €1.18/kg. Turkey trailed with just 21.23 million euros, reflecting its much lower average price of €0.48/kg.
