The Royal Gendarmerie has detained Abdellatif Sandil, a member of parliament from the National Rally of Independents (RNI), after stopping him on Tuesday evening at a judicial checkpoint in the Sidi Brahim Oasis area on the outskirts of Marrakech. According to Al-Akhbar newspaper, the arrest came after authorities discovered that he was wanted for issuing bad checks worth more than 1.3 million dirhams. The public prosecutor ordered that the MP, who represents the Rhamna electoral district, be placed in provisional custody. It is worth noting that the Marrakech Court of First Instance had previously sentenced Sandil in another case to a four-month suspended prison term and a fine of 310,000 dirhams after finding him guilty of «issuing a check without sufficient funds». He had been arrested earlier but was released following the complainants' withdrawal, with the total value of those checks amounting to 8 million dirhams.
