Brahim Boughali, President of the Algerian Parliament / DR ‹ › Algeria is setting its sights on the presidency of the Pan-African Parliament, headquartered in South Africa. This ambition was unveiled by the president of Algeria's lower house, Brahim Boughali, as reported by local media. The contender from Algeria for this prestigious role is Fateh Boutbig, a parliamentarian who also leads the Future Front Party. Boughali highlighted that Egypt, Libya, and Zimbabwe have also put forward candidates for this continental election. The initial round is slated for April, with a second round possible if required. For the moment, Morocco has yet to announce a candidate. «The kingdom might allow Algeria to contend with some of its African "allies"», a well-informed source disclosed to Yabiladi. It's noteworthy that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently extolled relations with Egypt in February, recalling the country's support for the Algerian army during the 1963 Sand War against Morocco, as he mentioned in an interview with Algerian media. Algiers maintains robust ties with the Libyan government led by Abdelhamid Dbeibah, who governs from Tripoli. In stark contrast, relations remain strained with General Khalifa Haftar, whose influence spans the East, South, and parts of the West of Libya. Already on the campaign trail, the Algerian candidate has initiated a series of diplomatic engagements. Last week, he visited Addis Ababa to confer with Algerian Selma Malika Haddadi, the first vice-president of the African Union Commission.
