DR ‹ › The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) has stressed the need to prevent building collapses and limit the damage caused by natural disasters, calling for the strict enforcement of existing laws and the full exercise of oversight responsibilities, particularly in matters related to construction, urban planning, and the fight against corruption. In a statement issued on Wednesday by its political bureau, the party emphasized the importance of complying with approved infrastructure and land-use planning schemes, tailored to the specific characteristics of each area. These include drainage and sewage networks, riverbed management, as well as protective and small-scale dams. The PPS also called on the government to activate compensation mechanisms for victims and material losses by implementing the provisions of the law establishing a system to cover the consequences of catastrophic events. Furthermore, the party urged the government to take the necessary decisions to officially declare the city of Safi a «natural disaster zone». It added that such a step would make it possible to begin identifying victims and affected residents, determine their eligibility, and assess damages with a view to disbursing compensation through the Solidarity Fund against Catastrophic Events.
