The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka ‹ › Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka stressed the need to maintain the pace of dam construction while responding to oral questions in the House of Councillors on Tuesday regarding the impact of recent rainfall on dam reserves. He outlined national filling rates and announced that the construction timeline of the Tamri Dam has been shortened by three years, with works set to be completed and the filling phase to begin next June. On inter-basin water transfers, the minister recalled the completion of the Sebou–Bouregreg transfer section, through which 953 million cubic meters of water have already been conveyed. He also noted that the second phase of the project, linking the Sebou basin to the Bouregreg and Oum Er-Rbia basins up to the Al Massira Dam, was launched this year. Regarding seawater desalination, Baraka said current production stands at 350 million cubic meters, with the aim of reaching 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030. He specified that four desalination plants are currently under construction, with a combined annual capacity of 567 million cubic meters. Additional facilities have been launched in Nador and Tangier, while projects are planned in Guelmim, Tan-Tan, and Souss-Massa in Tiznit. Finally, the minister announced the continuation of wastewater treatment programs, with treated volumes expected to increase from 40 million cubic meters to 100 million by 2027. These efforts are being carried out alongside drinking water supply programs for urban and rural areas, benefiting 22,000 villages and 767 rural centers, as part of the National Water Plan through 2050.
