DR ‹ › Algeria's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, held a phone conversation on Thursday with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, who has been in office since May 13, 2025. The Western Sahara issue was at the heart of their discussions. The two officials «discussed recent developments in the negotiation process to resolve the Western Sahara issue, in light of UN Security Council Resolution 2797», according to a statement from Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The exchange comes as part of Algeria's diplomatic efforts ahead of the UN Security Council's «strategic review» of MINURSO's mandate, scheduled for April 30. Although Canada is not a member of the Council, it plays a significant role as a contributor to the United Nations mission in Western Sahara, allowing it to take part in meetings related to MINURSO. Algeria, which opposes any changes to the mission's mandate, is seeking to rally influential countries to its position, urging them to exert pressure on the United States. A similar approach was adopted by Algiers last October, ahead of the adoption of Resolution 2797. On the same day, Attaf also held talks with his counterparts in Italy and South Africa.
