DR ‹ › Morocco has announced a complete suspension of its tomato exports to African countries and a partial reduction to Europe until further notice. This move aims to stabilize domestic prices, which recently soared to around 15 dirhams per kilogram. The decision, confirmed by the Moroccan Interprofessional Federation for the Production and Export of Fruits and Vegetables, was taken last Monday by the Independent Agency for the Control and Coordination of Exports under the Ministry of Agriculture. However, there are concerns about the potential impact on the credibility of Moroccan exporters. A federation source told the Spanish news agency EFE that the suspension was implemented «in a consensual and amicable manner» between the Ministry of Agriculture and exporters' associations, allowing for a gradual control of prices. However, federation sources cautioned that Moroccan exporters are tied to contracts with partners in Africa and Europe. Breaking these agreements could prompt partners to turn to alternative suppliers in competing countries. In 2024, Morocco exported approximately 767,347 tons of fresh tomatoes, valued at an estimated 975 million euros. The European Union received 75.6% of these exports, while the United Kingdom accounted for 16.58%.
