The Montauban court in France is reviewing a case involving a suspected family-run drug trafficking network operating between Castelsarrasin, Morocco, and the Netherlands. Prosecutors allege that K.J., 56, headed the organization, relying on his children, ex-wives, and close associates in a tightly structured operation with clearly defined roles. The case surfaced in June 2022 after a routine traffic stop in the Varennes area led to the discovery of 80 kilograms of hashish and more than 100 cannabis plants in a house in the Bourne region. The investigation quickly expanded, incorporating electronic surveillance, audio recordings, and field inquiries. Twelve individuals are on trial, with prosecutors seeking sentences ranging from six months suspended to 12 years in prison, depending on their level of involvement. The two main defendants face the most severe penalties: up to 12 years in prison and asset forfeiture. One individual could receive a three-year sentence, with 18 months under supervision, while the sons of one of the main defendants face up to five and six years, along with the seizure of money and vehicles. Several women in the family circle are also charged, accused of supporting the operation by transferring funds or providing vehicles. Prosecutors have recommended lighter sentences for them—between six months and one year suspended—with the seizure of related assets. Some defendants have denied any involvement. The defense has challenged the strength of the evidence, especially in the case of the alleged leader's former wife, who was named in the investigation without ever being questioned. The case is still under deliberation, with a verdict pending.
