The Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AMMPS) has announced a ban on cosmetic products containing Diphenyl Trimethylbenzoyl Phosphine Oxide (TPO), prohibiting their production, import, sale, and use. In a press release, the agency alerted healthcare professionals, beauty industry stakeholders, and consumers that nail polishes and gels containing TPO are now strictly forbidden. According to AMMPS, the decision follows a comprehensive review of available scientific data and international safety standards. The assessment found that TPO, commonly used as a photoinitiator in certain UV-cured gels and nail polishes, has a worrisome toxicological profile. Studies indicate that repeated exposure to the substance may present health risks, including potential toxic effects. AMMPS stressed that immediate measures must now be taken. Beauty professionals are required to stop using products containing TPO and remove them from their services. Consumers, meanwhile, are urged to carefully review the ingredients of nail polishes and gels to ensure compliance with current safety regulations.
