Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch strongly defended King Mohammed VI's decision to entrust the organization of the 2026 legislative elections to the Ministry of the Interior. «His Majesty was clear in his Throne Day speech. I am pleased that this responsibility has been given to the Minister of the Interior», he said in an interview with Al Aoula and 2M. Akhannouch recalled that former Prime Minister Saâd-Eddine El Othmani had chaired only «one meeting» in preparation for the 2021 elections. «However, faced with disagreements between the parties, the Ministry of the Interior had to step in», he explained. The head of government also accused certain actors of «instrumentalizing» the royal decision for political purposes. In his Throne Day address on July 29, King Mohammed VI instructed the Minister of the Interior to carefully prepare the upcoming legislative elections. «Political consultations must be conducted with the various stakeholders», he said. The King particularly underlined «the importance of preparing the General Election Code for the House of Representatives, which must be adopted and published before the end of the year».
