On Monday, November 3, both chambers of the Moroccan Parliament convened for a joint session to discuss and adopt UN Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning the Sahara issue. During the session, Abdellah Bouanou, president of the parliamentary group of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), proposed the creation of a «parliamentary friendship group with Algeria». In his address, the PJD MP also warned against the rise of «hate speech» targeting «our brothers in Tindouf and Algeria», calling instead for a spirit of fraternity and dialogue between the Moroccan and Algerian peoples. It is worth recalling that Algeria unilaterally cut diplomatic ties with Morocco in August 2021, subsequently closing its airspace to Moroccan civilian and military aircraft and imposing several economic retaliatory measures. Earlier that year, in February 2021, a group of Algerian parliamentarians sent a letter to then–U.S. President Joe Biden, urging him to reverse the decision of his predecessor, Donald Trump, who on December 10, 2020, recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara.
