DR ‹ › Morocco, represented by its Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, Omar Hilale, was appointed on Wednesday by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, to co-facilitate, alongside Finland's Ambassador, Elina Kalkku, the review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. Omar Hilale's appointment reflects the credibility, trust, and respect Morocco enjoys on the international stage as a reliable partner and a leading actor in multilateral diplomacy. It also reaffirms the Kingdom's commitment to actively contributing to the successful review of the UN's Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, in a spirit of consensus, dialogue, consultation, and shared responsibility. This appointment constitutes a strong and well-deserved recognition of Morocco's central role in international efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism. It underscores the credibility, consistency, and effectiveness of the Moroccan approach, which is grounded in a comprehensive vision combining security measures, prevention, regional and international cooperation, respect for human rights and the rule of law, as well as the promotion of moderation and coexistence. The intergovernmental negotiation process will involve consultations with all UN member states and key stakeholders. Morocco and Finland will jointly lead the review of the strategy's implementation, with conclusions expected by June 2026. This UN responsibility is in line with Morocco's sustained cooperation with the United Nations, notably marked by the opening of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Programme Office in Rabat in 2021.
