DR ‹ › The Polisario Front has decided to withdraw its candidacy for the North Africa seat on the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term. The Front justified its decision by citing «a request from the brotherly State of Libya, which had sought support for its own candidacy», according to the SPS News Agency. The same source said the Polisario acted «out of a sense of responsibility, as the dean of the North African countries within the African Union» (sic). However, the Polisario was fully aware, when it submitted its candidacy three weeks ago, that Libya had already announced its intention to run for this strategic seat on the PSC. The withdrawal mainly underscores the difficulty faced by Algeria and the Polisario in rallying sufficient support to counter Morocco and Libya in the race for the Peace and Security Council. Elections for the PSC are scheduled for February 11 and 12, on the sidelines of the regular meeting of the African Union's foreign ministers.
