DR ‹ › The Polisario Front has officially submitted its candidacy for the North African seat on the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term, according to its press agency, SPS. According to the same source, the Front is expected to compete against Morocco and Libya. It is worth recalling that Tripoli failed last year to secure a seat on the PSC for the 2025–2028 term. After a particularly close race, the seat was ultimately awarded to Algeria during an extraordinary meeting of the AU Executive Council held in Addis Ababa in March, after the ordinary session in February 2025 failed to break the deadlock between the candidates. The next PSC elections are scheduled for February 11 and 12, during the African Union's ordinary meeting of foreign ministers. Through this bid, the Polisario Front hopes to join Algeria on the Peace and Security Council. Under AU statutes, North Africa is entitled to two seats on this strategic body. Egypt and Mauritania are also competing for the seat. As for Tunisia, its close ties with Algeria under President Kaïs Saïed make it unlikely to oppose the Polisario's candidacy.
