DR ‹ › Mali seems to be taking a cautious approach, not rushing to emulate Niger's recent diplomatic shift towards Algeria. This sentiment is underscored by the Malian diplomatic response to circulating rumors about its ambassador's return to Algiers. In an official statement, the Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs firmly dismissed these claims, asserting that «completely false and unfounded information is circulating on social media, suggesting the return of our Ambassador to Algiers. This false information is deliberately spread by ill-intentioned individuals to sow confusion». The ministry urged the public to remain vigilant, stressing that «only information disseminated through its official communication channels is trustworthy». These rumors surface amidst a backdrop of warming relations between Algiers and Niamey. The Algerian government officially hosted General Abdourahamane Tiani on February 15 and 16, the leader of the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who had been perceived as having close ties with Algiers. Additionally, ties between Algeria and Burkina Faso appear to be strengthening, particularly following a visit by Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, to Ouagadougou on February 12. It's worth recalling that in April 2025, Algiers recalled its ambassadors from Mali and Niger after the Alliance of Sahel States accused it of supporting terrorism, following the destruction of a Malian drone. Bamako and Niamey responded with reciprocal actions, intensifying diplomatic tensions in the region.
