DR ‹ › The Republic of Ecuador reaffirmed on Friday its support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, describing it as the only serious, credible, and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This position was outlined in a joint communiqué signed in Rabat following talks between Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Ecuador's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom. Ecuador also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), reiterating that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most feasible solution to resolve the dispute. Both countries further reaffirmed their support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, as well as for efforts aimed at advancing the political process toward a definitive resolution of the conflict. The joint communiqué also notes that Ecuador has decided to extend its consular coverage to the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with international law. In addition, Ecuador expressed its willingness to promote economic and trade cooperation opportunities in the Moroccan Sahara, opening promising prospects toward the African continent, benefiting its economic sectors and strengthening exchanges in investment, trade, and productive development. The Ecuadorian minister also announced that Ecuador's ambassador in Rabat will soon visit the Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives.
