DR ‹ › A Moroccan-born candidate for municipal council in Italy, Aicha Achchab, has been targeted by a wave of racist insults on social media following the announcement of her candidacy in Chieti, a city in southern Italy. The backlash erupted online shortly after her candidacy was made public, with anonymous users launching what the Democratic Party described as «gratuitous insults» and «unrestrained hatred», in attacks seen as both political and racist, local media reported last Friday. In response, the Democratic Party strongly condemned the campaign, emphasizing that Achchab's profile reflects years of commitment to integration and social cohesion. Party officials stressed that those behind the attacks could face consequences, noting that the use of fake accounts does not shield individuals from legal responsibility. Achchab declined to comment publicly, saying she remains at peace. Originally from Casablanca, Achchab has lived in Chieti for years, where she built her family life and career as a cultural mediator. She also heads the Al Nur charity, which supports women and promotes integration. She is running on the Democratic Party list.
