Nouakchott will host the first edition of the Moroccan-Mauritanian Parliamentary Forum on May 9 and 10. According to the news site Anbaa (April 30), the event is intended to serve as «a platform for dialogue, consultation, and cooperation between the Mauritanian National Assembly and the two chambers of the Moroccan Parliament». The idea of bringing the two legislative bodies closer was first raised in July 2022 in Nouakchott by Naam Miyara, then president of the Chamber of Councillors. It was revived in February 2024 during a visit by the president of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, to the Mauritanian capital. Although the forum's launch had been delayed, it gained new momentum following the meeting between King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani in Casablanca on December 20, 2024. Two weeks before this summit, the president of the Mauritanian National Assembly, Mohamed Ould Meguett, paid an official visit to Morocco. A Morocco-Mauritania parliamentary friendship group, established in 2024 and made up of 20 deputies from across Mauritania's political spectrum, is also working to deepen ties between the two parliaments. It's worth noting that Nouakchott also hosted Morocco's Trade Week from April 24 to 30. These Moroccan civil and military initiatives in Mauritania are being closely watched by the Polisario, as reflected in the media coverage surrounding the growing rapprochement between Rabat and Nouakchott.
