Current AI has announced a partnership with Morocco to promote artificial intelligence (AI) for the public good in Africa, through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties. The agreement was unveiled on the second and final day of the National AI Conference held on July 2 in Salé, with the initiative receiving financial backing from the Moroccan government. In a statement, Current AI is described as «an innovative global partnership launched in Paris last February during the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence, aimed at harnessing AI for the public good». The initiative benefits from an initial investment of $400 million from the French government, the AI Collaborative, as well as contributions from various governments, philanthropic organizations, and leading companies. As part of the partnership, Morocco will participate in the inaugural General Assembly of Current AI this July. Martin Tisné, President of the initiative's prefiguration committee, welcomed Morocco as one of its «founding members» and hailed the formalization of a «shared commitment to open, inclusive, and value-driven artificial intelligence». Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco's Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, emphasized that the MoU lays the foundation for «a governance architecture for AI that serves the common good». Morocco's financial commitment to Current AI is intended to support pilot programs focused on linguistic diversity, healthcare, and accountability, key areas for testing approaches to public-interest AI. The broader goal is to «generate evidence, identify emerging challenges, and experiment with solutions within the AI ecosystem», the statement concluded.
