On the morning of Thursday, July 10, a protest took place in front of the Regional Directorate of Education in the Moulay Rachid district of Casablanca, following the tragic death of young teacher Mouad Ben El Hamra, who took his own life in circumstances that have sparked widespread controversy and emotional reactions. The demonstration, organized by the National Federation of Education (FNE), drew a large turnout of educators, union members, and human rights advocates, who raised slogans demanding justice for the late teacher. The incident stems from the suicide of the newly appointed teacher, who had been working in a school under the same directorate. His death came after he was temporarily suspended from his duties over an allegation of violence against a student. According to demonstrators, the teacher had been assigned to three different schools across multiple municipalities, with no regard for the long distances or the toll on his well-being. They say this excessive workload, combined with his suspension, carried out without a proper hearing, left him feeling isolated and humiliated, deeply undermining both his professional and personal dignity. Amid the public outcry, the Regional Directorate released a statement denying claims that his salary had been suspended, asserting that he had received his June pay. However, a widely shared document contradicted this, showing that his salary had indeed been withheld, with the exception of family allowances, pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing. This discrepancy only fueled further tension and uncertainty. In response, FNE called for a thorough and impartial investigation to hold accountable anyone involved in the case. The union also condemned what it described as «a campaign of misinformation and lies» by the directorate to justify what it sees as «arbitrary and unjust» decisions. It strongly denounced the alleged harassment and administrative abuse that, in its view, contributed to stripping the young teacher of his right to life.
