In a surprising turn of events, Mounir El Qadiri Boutchich, Sheikh of Qadiriyya Boutchichiyya Sufi order, announced on Tuesday that he is stepping down in favor of his younger brother, Mouad El Qadiri Boutchich. The decision comes just days after the passing of their father, Sheikh Jamal Eddine El Qadiri Boutchich. Mounir explained that the move followed «trusting in God, seeking guidance, and deep reflection», adding that his aim is to «preserve the unity of the family and the order». He underscored that leadership is «a responsibility, not an honor, and sincerity is its measure». He urged all followers to stand behind his brother and «show him respect and good faith», reaffirming the order's core principles of «purity of intention, clarity of purpose, and service to people and country». He also called on members to steer clear of «arguments, speculation, and suspicion», and to avoid «personal disputes», stressing that «our path is one of etiquette, discretion, and loyalty». Sheikh Mounir renewed his pledge to «serve the glorious Alawite throne and uphold the nation's constants under the leadership of the Commander of the Faithful». Sheikh Jamal Eddine El Qadiri Boutchich passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025, at the military hospital in Rabat, aged 86. Last January, during the commemoration of the eighth anniversary of Sheikh Hamza's death, he had publicly designated his eldest son, Mounir, as his successor, entrusting him with the «spiritual trust». Four days after his father's passing, Mounir transferred this role to his brother Mouad.
