The Spanish National Police have arrested a 51-year-old Italian fugitive at Alicante Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Morocco. The man, wanted under a European arrest warrant issued by Italy since April 2024, faces up to eight years in prison for drug trafficking charges, according to Spanish media. The case traces back to 2006, when Italian authorities uncovered a drug operation involving the sale and purchase of hashish and cocaine in Lignano. Although initially detained, the suspect managed to escape before his trial could commence. After years of evading capture, the Italian authorities' European arrest warrant was finally executed in September 2025. Airport security at Alicante flagged the fugitive during an identity check as he was preparing to fly to Morocco. The suspect has been transferred to the National Court in Madrid, where proceedings for his extradition to Italy are set to take place.
