The Spanish Civil Guard intercepted nearly seven tons of hashish smuggled from Morocco in two consecutive operations last weekend in the Strait of Gibraltar. The smugglers threw the packages overboard while trying to escape, but security forces later recovered them, Spanish media reported. The first operation took place on Saturday off the coast of Tarifa (Cádiz), where a speedboat heading toward Ceuta was spotted. After a joint chase by marine units from Algeciras and Ceuta, the smugglers dumped 56 packages weighing more than 2.2 tons. On Sunday, September 14, a patrol from Algeciras intercepted another suspicious boat one mile south of Tarifa carrying six people. During the pursuit, they jettisoned 116 packages, estimated at more than 4.5 tons of hashish. In total, the Civil Guard seized 6.7 tons of drugs, with an estimated street value of more than nine million euros. The case has been referred to the competent judicial authorities.
