During a Second Division match between SV Spakenburg and Kozakken Boys on Saturday, October 18, in Werkendam, a city in the southern Netherlands, Moroccan-Dutch striker Ahmed El Azzouti was subjected to racist chants and post-match violence. Supporters reportedly shouted anti-Moroccan adn Islamophobic slurs during the game, which ended 2–1 after El Azzouti scored the winning goal. After the match, chaos erupted when dozens of Kozakken Boys fans surrounded Spakenburg's team bus. El Azzouti, who previously played for Kozakken Boys, was escorted through a side exit, but once supporters spotted him, a smoke bomb was thrown in his direction. As he fled, a steward allegedly shoved him, shouting «Now get lost!» while the gates remained open, allowing fans to chase and assault him and his family. «I saw my brother and younger brother being beaten. We ran to the bus, but my mother was still inside the sports park», El Azzouti told RTV Utrecht, adding that Kozakken Boys players eventually helped his mother to safety. Police in West Brabant confirmed that they intervened at the scene and escorted the players' bus to the highway, though no official complaint has yet been filed.
