In his report on the Sahara, presented to the members of the Security Council on September 30, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres recommended extending the mandate of MINURSO in Western Sahara for another year, until October 31, 2026. Meanwhile, the United States has submitted a draft resolution proposing a shorter extension, until January 31, 2026. This limited timeframe is being pushed by the Trump administration to encourage stakeholders, particularly Algeria and the Polisario Front, to return to negotiations launched in December 2018 under UN auspices, but this time with a stronger focus on Morocco's 2007 autonomy plan for the Sahara. The UN Security Council is expected to meet at the end of October 2025 to adopt the new resolution on the Sahara issue.
