A total of 70 new buses were received on Saturday at the port of Agadir, marking the launch of the first phase of Morocco's new urban public transport program for the 2025–2029 period. The Greater Agadir area is among the six cities included in this initial phase, which aims to equip all Moroccan cities with efficient and reliable urban transport systems that meet citizens' expectations in terms of both quality and capacity. Speaking to MAP, Jamal Barkach, Operations Director at the Grand Agadir Local Development Company for Mobility and Urban Transport, explained that under this program, 58 additional buses will arrive at the same port in early November, while another 41 will reach the port of Casablanca next week. The overall operation for the Greater Agadir area will include a total of 247 buses. Barkach noted that this initiative complements the Agadir Urban Development Program (2020–2024), particularly its component dedicated to urban transport, which has already enabled the acquisition of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicles. The new national bus transport program lays the groundwork for a new model of sustainable mobility governance serving citizens. It also aligns with the High Royal Directives outlined in King Mohammed VI's message to the second National Conference on Advanced Regionalization, held in Tangier in December 2024. With an allocated budget of nearly 11 billion dirhams, the program is jointly financed by the Ministry of the Interior (Directorate General of Local Authorities), the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the 12 regions of the Kingdom. National in scope, the initiative seeks to provide all Moroccan cities with modern, inclusive, and sustainable urban and peri-urban transport systems—placing the quality of service offered to citizens at the heart of public policy priorities.
