Niger has welcomed the adoption on October 31 of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which endorses Morocco's Autonomy Initiative as the basis for resolving the Sahara issue. The position was expressed on Thursday in Rabat by Niger's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, following talks with Moroccan FM Nasser Bourita, according to a statement from Moroccan diplomacy. Niamey reaffirmed its full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to lead the upcoming negotiation process on the basis of Morocco's autonomy plan, with the aim of reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, Sangaré said. In December 2023, Niger joined the initiative launched by King Mohammed VI to grant Sahel countries access to the Atlantic Ocean. In April 2025, the monarch received Bakary Yaou Sangaré in Casablanca, alongside the foreign ministers of Mali and Burkina Faso. The three countries have been part of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) since September 2023.
