The Spanish Secretary of State for Security, Áina Calvo, stated that Madrid is keen on forging a closer relationship with Algeria concerning migration, aiming to emulate the successful cooperation it shares with Morocco, a partnership she describes as a model in handling this sensitive issue, alongside Mauritania. During her address to the Senate's Interior Committee, Calvo underscored that the collaboration between Spain and Morocco on migration serves as a benchmark that the Spanish government aspires to replicate with other nations in the region. However, she pointed out that the relationship with Algeria «can be improved», highlighting the lack of formal agreements governing deportation or repatriation procedures. Calvo noted that while police cooperation with Algeria continues, the current level of coordination falls short of the robust and stable ties Spain maintains with Morocco, particularly in tackling irregular migration and managing maritime crossing flows.
