DR ‹ › The Spanish National Police at Gran Canaria Airport have detained a man of Moroccan origin on suspicion of abandoning his minor son, after allegedly leaving the child alone in Spain without identification documents. The case dates back to December 19, when authorities discovered a Moroccan minor who had arrived alone at a Red Cross facility. The child told officials that he had traveled to the island with his father from Morocco the day before, but that his father had subsequently left him behind with the intention of returning home. The Foreigners and Borders Unit in the city of Telde took charge of the child, placing him in a minors' care center by order of the Public Prosecutor's Office. Meanwhile, security services launched an investigation, which confirmed that the father and son had entered Spain together on December 15, with airport surveillance footage documenting their movements after arrival. Following the identification of the father, police arrested him on December 19 as he attempted to leave Spain for Marrakech without his son. He was placed under judicial custody before a court ordered pre-trial detention, charging him with abandonment of a minor and violations of foreigners' rights. The child remains under the care and protection of a specialized center. Police stressed that the abandonment of minors constitutes a serious criminal offense and carries legal consequences.
