The victim was struck in the head and died at the scene. The weapon he was carrying was later found to be loaded with blanks. The officer told investigators that he feared for his life when he saw the gun and fired without realizing it was not real, citing poor visibility and the distance between them. The officer's defense maintains that the shooting was an act of self-defense. Authorities reported that the victim had a criminal record for drug-related offenses and for resisting a public officer, and that he was allegedly carrying narcotics at the time of the incident. An autopsy and ballistic tests have been ordered to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine the trajectory of the bullet.
