DR ‹ › Unsurprisingly, Mohamed Chouki was elected president of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), succeeding Aziz Akhannouch, following the party's extraordinary congress held on Sunday night in El Jadida. A former member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Chouki joined the RNI in recent years. He was the sole candidate to run for the party's top post after Akhannouch announced his decision to step down as RNI president on January 11. The new RNI leader now faces a major challenge: steering the party into the upcoming legislative elections. In his inaugural speech, Chouki said the party was ready to meet this test, noting that RNI leadership has already approved candidates in more than 90% of electoral districts. In the September 8, 2021 legislative elections, the RNI emerged as the leading party, a victory that prompted King Mohammed VI to appoint Akhannouch to form the government.
