DR ‹ › As the April deadline approaches for the UN Security Council's review of the Western Sahara issue, a delegation from Morocco's Royal Armed Forces (FAR) recently paid a strategic visit to New York, according to a well-informed source contacted by Yabiladi. During high-level meetings with senior United Nations officials, discussions focused on the future of MINURSO, the UN mission in Western Sahara, as well as the situation in the buffer zones east of the Sand Wall. Morocco is seeking to strengthen its control over these areas, which the Polisario Front has described as «liberated territories» since the September 1991 ceasefire agreement. According to the same source, Alexander Ivanko, the Russian head of the UN mission in Western Sahara, took part in the discussions with the Moroccan delegation. Under Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is required to present a strategic review of MINURSO's future mandate to the Security Council in April, taking into account the outcome of negotiations between the parties involved.
