Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin engaged in a phone conversation yesterday with Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Western Sahara. The talks centered on strategies to resolve the ongoing conflict in the region, as reported by the Russian diplomatic corps. «The discussion focused on international efforts to advance a resolution in Western Sahara, following the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2797 on October 31», the statement highlighted. «Russia reaffirmed its support for the pivotal role of the United Nations in facilitating a mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara issue. This approach is grounded in previously approved Security Council resolutions and aligns with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, particularly the right to self-determination». On October 31, the United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of MINURSO for another year, referencing the Moroccan autonomy plan as a foundation for negotiations between the involved parties. Notably, Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained from the vote.
